9.3 Pro update from CD's ... or source?

I have the Suse 9.3 CD's and I am curious to know if I am able to copy them to a common folder on the hard drive and "Update" using "Change Installation Source of if i should just boot off CD1 and run the updates?

I updated my home PC last night using the CD1 and did note each disc needs it's own folder when copying to the hard disk, is there anything special I should look for?

Boot from CD1 and run 'Update existing installation'. This is the safest way!

Question

Hi!
I was wondering: is it possible to update from Suse 9.2 to Suse 9.3 using Suse's mirrors, by changing the "Source of installation" in YaST, so that it points to Suse 9.3 instead of 9.2, and choosing "Update all where new version is available" in "Install/Remove"? (of course, when 9.3 will be available on mirrors). Or it's necessary to have the CD's?
What could go wrong if I'd try this?

PS: I did an ftp install for Suse 9.2 and I'd like to do an ftp install for suse 9.3, but not to lose all the work (configuring, installing different programs..) I've done.

It is possible, but you will probably run into dependency problems with the kernel. The problem is that the old kernel is still in memory during installation. If you boot from CD first, this will give you the correct kernel-version (and you know for sure if the new kernel works with your hardware).

But you can do an FTP update as well. You download the boot CD that they will most probably offer as soon as 9.3-FTP has been released and select FTP as installation source.

Thumbs up

That's nice! Thanks! All I have to do now is to wait for Suse 9.3 to be released on ftp... Then I think I'll give it a try.

One more question: Is it better to do a fresh install, or an update should do alright?

I usually prefer a fresh installation. Sometimes the config-files to not fit 100% to the software in the new version. But it may also work without problems...
