10.1 Nvidia upgrade

I know this subject has has alot of examination but here goes anyway: I have Suse 10.1 and it has been working great, I've been installing all the updates w/o a problem. Last nite a nvidia update came up with an X11 update and I didn't pay any attention to it, I just installed it w/o a problem........until I rebooted. Now I'm in the install nvidia situation and don't remember how to do it. I didn't even look at what version was installed.
How can I get my X back? I've tried "telinit 3" and "sax2 -r -m 0=nvidia" but I can't get it to work. What was the last update to come down from the update installer, not SMART?

Help please. The thing's been working SO good it makes me sick I let this slip by me.

Talking Reloading nVidia Graphics Driver

To reload the nvidia driver, we must first assume you have a copy on your hard drive. Further, you need to be in the "init 3" state. If you are in KDE or GNOME, open a terminal session, do a su to become root and enter "init 3". If you can only get to the terminal mode, enter root as the user and its password. Do a "init 3" to get to that mode. Init 3 kills the X Server and puts you at the Linux command prompt. Once you are in init 3, you need to enter the root name and password one more time.

Next, change to the folder where your copy of the nVidia driver is loaded and enter the following, but using the name of your nVidia file.

sh .\NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-100.14.09-pkg2.run

You will be asked several questions. You need to have a copy of your kernel source files loaded in your copy of Linux. The latest versions of the driver asks if you want to make the nVidia driver the default and don't require a manual command any more.

Thank You,

OK, I'm going to try that. But I can't get to the terminal. And when I upgraded I didn't pay attention to where it went. I had a working nvidia module. And I got an automatic update for nvidia and X11. I foolishly let them install and paid no attention until I rebooted now I have no X. Thanks for the reply. I see what works.

Sounds like perhaps the driver version no longer supports your card model.

I had the same thing happen. Nvidia upgrade messed up my system real bad. After a week of trying to get it all back up and running i gave up and reinstalled
Sax would give errors even after reloading the NVIDIA drivers the old way via kernel source etc.
I should have used G4L but..............

At this point If I were where you are I would try a fresh install 0f 10.2 but let me say that if you followed jdmcdaniel3's instructions precisely it should have worked..I have done it several times to save an otherwise dead X11 from an un-wise update..
Maybe others will have a better suggestion..
goodluck,
