nvidia videocards in 9.1 - upgrade/installation using YOU
during the installation there was a comment about nvidia videocards that need to be upgraded/installed through YOU. i have this one:
Quote:
PNY Verto GeForce4 Ti4200-8X 64MB DDR TV-Out Retail AGP8X
|
installed like this
and 3d-acceleration is deactivated. are things like they are supposed to be? i thought i have a pretty good 3d-card, that's why i am asking. though, the times i used the pc for playing seem to be gone...

if your asking why you don't have 3D acceleration dissabled it's because the system defaults to that, you have to explicitly tell the system to run with 3D-enabled. open up SaX2 to enable 3D. I have the same card wth 128MB memory and 3D works fine.
Update: If you upgrade your kernel you will need to reinstall your nVidia drivers to get them to work.

SuSE has two main System config tools YaST (Yet another Setup Tool), and SaX2 (SuSE Admin for X, if I remember correctly). YaST was originally designed to handle the system administration as well as administrating the computer components inside the case (MoBo, Lan, Modem, Hard Drive, etc.) SaX was designed to handle the user interface perifrials (Monitor, Videocard, Mouse, keyboard, etc.).
If you open up your K menu/start menu then go to System --> Configration you should see SaX2 listed
If you open it up it will ask you for your root password then it will open a window with:
Desktop
Multihead
Input-Devices
AccessX
listed on the left, and on the right you should see:
Monitor
Graphics Card
Color and Resolution
Virtual Resolution
3D Acceleration
Geometry
click on 3D Acceleration and you should see something that says Enable 3D features with a check box next to it.
check the box click finish, then click Finalize then SaX2 will ask if you want to test your configuration click testand make sure you get a blue screen with some buttons and a little circle in the middle that says "3D" in it. Click save and then exit Sax2. Log out of your session so that the X windows system can restart and when you log back in you should have 3D acceleration enabled.
To test it try to run something like Unreal Tournament 2004, or Enemy Territory if you happen to have one of them if not right click on your desktop to open your desktop config and change your screen saver to an OpenGL screen saver, if it works everything is running fine.

I have a similar problem, and I am a recent convert to Linux. I do not know a lot about it, but in reading through the Nvidia driver support on their site, it suggested recompiling the kernel with the new driver. As a newb it took me a while to figure out what to do, but I ran into a problem. I cant run the Nvidia driver for recompile while in X-windows and I cant seem to find a way to boot to a command promt for login to the root, it only gives me the GUI every time.
First, how do I get SuSE 9.1 to boot to a command prompt?
Second problem I am running into is I was running a dual monitor setup, one on the digital output (converted to analog with the dongle) and one on the analog output. It will only recognize the one on the digital unless I unplug it, then it will go to the analog. Will installing the new drivers allow for multi head? Or is there another way?

For installing nVidia drives you should just be able to startup YOU (YaST Online Update), In your tool bar at the bottom you should see a small green/yellow/red circle icon if you click on it it will start up YOU click the button that says start online update there is a drop down box that has a list of SuSE ftp sites choose one close to you and start the update. when the update window open if you scroll down to the bottom of the list of patches there will be one in Black type that says nVidia. check it and click on Finish and SuSE will download and install the nVidia drivers as well as a patched kernel. No Problem no fuss.
If you still have your mind set on compiling your own kernel what you need to do to get a command prompt is at your log in screen login as root but change your session type to "minimal" from the drop down menu on the login screen. When you login you should get just a small window with a command prompt. X Windows is still running so you need to type "init 3" into the command propt and it will shut down X Windows and give you a command prompt. When you are done log back into root and type "init 5" to restart the Xwindows and go back to a Graphical interface.
As for dual monitor support at this time I don't think Linux has the capability to run two monitors through one device with the possable exception of running a high end workstation card like the Fire GL series cards. Mind you I have not looked in a while since my second montor died. If there is suport it would be through the nVidia driver and you should be able to find some info on the nVidia site.

I have already tried that, and unfortunately YaST has been useless. I found some additional information on editing the config, but I need the new drivers in there as well. How can I boot to a command prompt?

How has YaST been useless? does it not install the nVidia drivers or what? dome details on what it's not doing might help.
As far as booting to the command prompt I generaly dont boot to it I just use the method I descibed to shut down the Graphical system and get to a command prompt using the init 3 command.

YaST has given me a generic recognition of my Nvidia card, instead of giving me the FX 4200 recognition, just a 0x028, which is the generic chipset. Because x-windows is running the Nvidia component, it will not let me load the drivers from nvidia unless I am at a command prompt, and with all the problems I have had trying to get it to where it is (actually readable) I am afraid to set it to something generic then run it from a terminal window.

Mine is listed just like your is with a generic chipset name as well but everything works just as it should, I get great 3D rendering as well as preaty good colorand resolution without being able to use a calibrator.

"As for dual monitor support at this time I don't think Linux has the capability to run two monitors through one device........."
it is possible through the sax2 Multihead option
as long as your card supports dual monitors, the NVIDIA driver includes support.

Too get out of X for install, just use ctrl+alt+f1, login using root then kill X. I don't really remember how but it's something like # /etc/X11/initd/xdm stop. Could also be gdm or kdm instead of xdm. Not sure about the folder.
Then Sh the file and follow instructions.

I think there's confusion here about the various parts of YAST... you don't install the accelerated Nvidia drivers via sax2 or any other program which usually deals with drivers.
The only way (since Nvidia won't allow Suse to include an accelerated binary) is through YOU. YOU doesn't only download updated components, it also runs scripts. So, use YOU to "update" the fetchnvidia script. During "update" this script will then download the newest nvidia drivers and add them to your system. This is the ONLY way that I can recommend.
P.S. to reinstall/update the driver, just "reinstall" the fetchnvidia Script
