Problem in booting from cdrom

hi all,
I have SunFire 280R machine with solaries 5.7 currently installed.I'm trying to install Fedora Core 4 from cdrom.I have tried to issue "Stop A" command to get {ok} prompt and issue {ok} boot cdrom ,but i get some crazy messages like
Can't read disk label
Can't read disk label package
Evaluating: boot cdrom [[ -nowin]]
Can't open boot device

I have also tried to use the {ok} devalias to get the actual name for my cdrom n use it with boot command but was unsuccesfully.
Is there any one knows how to workaround this problem?
thanks,
petero.

Dumb question: you are using sparc version of the Fedora cdrom right?

Hi Bulliver,
Good question.I think that might be the problem, because really i have'nt seen the Fedora core 4 version for sparc, but i have seen its compatible with x86,ppc,x86_64.
Could that be the case?..is there anyway to solve this issue?

To tell the truth, I have no idea if Fedora has a sparc version. I can tell you though that there is no way an x86 or x86_64 cd is going to run and install on a sparc box...two completely different cpu architectures.

A reasonable option would be to install Solaris Express on that box.

You may try debian for sparc architectures, it woould be a reasonable option for your Netra.

A SunFire 880 is not a Netra, but debian for UltraSPARC may work.

SuSE used to have a sparc version, not sure if they still do. I don't think RH has a sparc version at all. Recommend you give Solaris a try (assuming you have enough system resources to run it). I'm a longtime Linux user on the desktop (historically, BSD on the server side) and I've found that Solaris 10 makes a great server AND desktop OS! I'm slowly migrating that way now!

A SF280R is definitely having enough resources for Solaris 10 and Express.

Thanks all,
I tried almost all suggestions, now i'm getting almost the same errors when trying to install Solaries 10 in Sunfire 280R machine from the cdrom.I downloded the Solaries10 burn in CDs and when i boot from the cdrom i got these error messages
Bad magic number in disk label
Cant open disk label package
Cant open disk device

I tried {ok} boot cdrom, and use alias for the cdrom but was unsuccessful.
Any idea of what is happening here?
Petero

It seems to me that you may have problems with the cds you are burning. I have a hell of a tough time with some of these "cheapie" brands . Perhaps you can try a cd from sun (if you have one); perhaps your cdrom is not working any more.

Besides that, fedora 4 is not available for sparc and the only versions that I have used are suse (7.3 was the last one) and aurora sparc (based on red hat). Mandrake and others discontinued their sparc distros.

Try solaris 10 (way cool!) with zones (virtual machines). I like it a lot.

I'm running Fedora (Aurora) on a Sun Ultra 5 and it is fantastic.

As I'm not allowed to post a URL as yet, go find Aurora Linux dot org!
