Ok, I'm still researching how to get this upgrade done. I basically just need more space on the / slice. disk1 has a 6 GB / slice, a couple of swap slices and an 8 GB slice, /space. I've cleared off /space by moving the files and directories in there to disk2.
Just curious, is this a viable plan:
tar cf /space/usr.tar /usr
cd /space
tar xf usr.tar
rm -rf /usr
ln -s /space/usr /usr
Will this allow me to move /usr to /space and then link to it and still be able to complete the Solaris 8 to 9 upgrade? Will /usr then be stuck on /space? After the upgrade, could I simply move /usr back to / ? The /usr directory is about 1.8 GB and that would free up just enough space, I hope, to get past the problem I've had with the upgrade so far.
Thanks...
EDIT: Or, I could temporarily move /export/home and /var and a directory called /visionary. Would moving these be easier, better etc? The size of those directories add up to just about enough space to free up to get through the upgrade.
The thing I'm worried about is hosing up some critical directory by moving it off / , doing the upgrade, and then not being able to get people the access back to whatever they had going previously.
Well, I finally tar'ed up 4 directories and moved them to disk2 and deleted them from disk1. Started the upgrade process once again and this time it looks like it is going through!
However, the progress bar at the bottom of the 'Installing' dialog box has only moved about 1/5 of the way in the last 40 minutes.
Should it be this slow on a Blade 100 Workstation, 500Mhz UltraSparc-IIe?
That does seem slow but as long as it keeps going slowly, it should all be okay I would think. If the progress bar just stops and doesn't move at all for a significant amount of time, there could be problems.
