Problem with MySQL


I installed Slackware 10 with MySQL. But when its trying to start, arise problem:
"ERROR 2002: Can't connect to local MySQL server throught socket '/var/run/mysql/mysql.sock'"
How can i make this server work? I newbie in Slackware, and in Mandrake never meet this problem.
Please help.

Welcome to LQ.

Take a look at your /etc/my.cnf configuration file and make sure that the socket lines under the server and client portions match.

I know this post is over a month old, but i figured out a solution:

If you use mySQL administrator, click the details button and type into the "Connect using socket file":
/var/run/mysql/mysql.sock

it's trying to access /var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock instead of the right location. hope this helps.

I have same problem. but I did not have /etc/my.cnf and /var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock.

Any idea?

yeah, in /etc, you have to rename one of the provided files ie my-small.cnf,my-medium.cnf, or my-large.cnf and name it my.cnf

also, /var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock won't exist...it exists in /var/run/mysql/mysql.sock

if you're using Navicat, in the settings goto advanced settings and put in the new location to the sock file.

I have Mandrake 9.1, and after kernel panic, I don't have mysql.sock

huh? kernel panic? if you have kernel panic then how you can boot your box? I run the mysql by --user=root rather than --user=mysql
