Everything has alternatives but one should always think out a installation. 'LVM' will not fit everyone's needs nor wants.
Whenever you system generate or regenerate then every possible solution should be addressed whenever possible. Partitioning schemes can be very personal even for production machines. But I prefer to be sure about reliabilities along with recovery for my system setups. Growth should be considered but I for one don't depend on 'LVM' for very obvious reasons. Ext2/3 will meet needs easily and reliably for systems and have so for a long time. The tools for support are reliable and efficient. Hopefully 'ext4' will have the same reputation as a reliable filesystem.
