Ethernet NIC (Broadcom4400) not working on Dell Inspiron 5150 laptop, Slackware10.2

I'm out of options (other than installing Fedora again), please help. I tried downloading the linux driver from the official broadcom page ((can't post urls yet)www broadcom com support ethernet_nic downloaddrivers.php)

The download contains an rpm and source code. I tried first with the rpm, but obtained an error "Failed dependencies: /bin/sh required". Slackware doesn't handle rpms well I was told, so I tried converting it with rpm2tgz then installpkg. Nothing appeared in the console after running this command so I assumed it worked ok, but when checking with modprobe bcm4400 I got this error:

modprobe bcm4400
/lib/modules/2.4.31/kernel/drivers/net/bcm4400.o: kernel-module version mismatch /lib/modules/2.4.31/kernel/drivers/net/bcm4400.o was compiled for kernel version 2.4.18-14
while this kernel is version 2.4.31.
/lib/modules/2.4.31/kernel/drivers/net/bcm4400.o: insmod /lib/modules/2.4.31/kernel/drivers/net/bcm4400.o failed
/lib/modules/2.4.31/kernel/drivers/net/bcm4400.o: insmod bcm4400 failed

I tried compiling the source too (with make) but got this compilation error.

but upon trying make, the compilation failed:

gcc -DMODULE -D__KERNEL__ -DDBG=0 -Wall -Wstrict-prototypes -O6 -I/lib/modules/`uname -r`/build/include -c -o b44um.o b44um.c
