That sounds to me like your main concerns are managing resources rather than it being painful to install or similar.
I'm thinking about offloading some really light stuff like dnsmasq and perhaps moving the scripts controlling my lights to lxc containers on a Pi or similar. I did think about flashing my router to OpenWRT or similar for dnsmasq etc, but I'm thinking now that as that works and I don't want to mess it up a Pi on the network doing some of the stuff in containers would be a good solution.
