Xeon and linux

What processor type do you use for Xeon when doing a recompile? Is it Pentium III Compermine family? I'm running this with Slackware 10.0 using the 2.4.26 kernel. Which option should I use?

Now I'm no expert but....

The Xeon's a 64bit processor isn't it, and NOT x86 compatible. I think it was something like XA-64 or something. I may be completely wrong with the shorthand code thing, but the essence is that NO it's not like a P3 (as far as I know... I'm an AMD boy really)

Im no expert either, but....

I believe Xeon recently became 64-bit. I think I recall reading it in a slashdot article. However, Xeon 32 bit is x86 compatible. On the latest kernel, 2.6.*, if its 32 bit, use the Pentium 4 Family option which includes Xeon. As for the 64-bit xeon (assuming I am correct that it exists), it should be AMD64/XA64. Basically Intel just used AMD64 and renamed it too Xa64 I believe. Someone should confirm this before recompiling your kernel as could be wrong.

Yep, I wouldn't believe a thing either of us say

Just hang on and somebody who actually knows what they're talking about will show up.

Xeon

On a dual 32bit HT 2.8Ghz Xeon unit here, I use Pentium 4.

If yours is like mine, you will need to put ACPI support into the kernel as well. Without it you will only see two of the cpu's.

Good Luck

what speed is your xeon?

some would be the p3 family, some would be the p4 family. if its in the 2ghz range, and its in a socket, its p4. if its a slot processor, its p3.
