IMHO it seems this poll is for -current users only, since stable users don't have access to KDE5 or XFCE 4.14. So since I use stable I'm going to not vote. I'm still of the opinion, and hope, that Slackware continue to have both DE and simple WM's, since some of us are still keeping very old hardware running.
I understand that XFCE 4.14 and KDE5 will be included in Slackware 15; Mr. Volkerding mentioned this here on LQ. So the newer DEs will be a part of the stable branch.
I am happy to wait for 15.
Just installed kde5 and "kwin --replace" no longer works with Xfce-4.12 and, as usual, kde5 has scrambled my Xfce appearance settings.
Sorry. My fault. I don't have access to Plasma now but -- from memory -- you need to replace xfwm4 in Plasma not with kwin but with kwin_x11 or kwin_wayland , depending on your setup. Most likely kwin_x11. Kwin was fine when all we had was X11 to handle the display. Now we have wayland as an alternative. At least with Eric's ktown.
Regarding kde scrambling your xfce settings, when you have a Gtk desktop to your satisfaction make sure you always back up your ~/.gtkrc-2.0 and your ~/.config/gtk3/settings.ini files. KDE can -- or will -- replace these with its own Gtk settings. Delete ~/.gtkrc-2.0-kde if you see it and restore your old file.
Distribution: Slackware64-current with "True Multilib" and KDE4Town.

Yes, I tried that, but it didn't work. I've removed all traces of kde5 from the hard drive, but I may get bored enough to try it again..... someday.....
This next one is just plain cute. The little girl was only 4 years old at the time. It might even bring a smile to the faces of our trolls. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ukD8zj6ngVY

Personally, I prefer Xfce-4.12 to them all, but if I had to pick between Xfce-4.14 and KDE, I would go with KDE-4. Between the two KDEs, KDE-4 would also be my choice.
Once I got the hang of Activities, I really like KDE/Plasma. At least on my desktop where I have some horsepower to expend. On my old Celeron-based laptop, Xfce works best (it's whatever version shipped with Slackware 14.2). While KDE works on the laptop, it's a little too much for the Celeron and the lower amount of RAM to handle without being sluggish.

In your experience, and briefly, how are Activities an improvement on Virtual Desktops? (These are things KDE should be promoting with an introductory video covering all the features nobody knows about.)

This thread really got me thinking about XFCE 4.12.0, and I thought "Why can't I have that?". It was burning a hole in my head and I had to try it.
It still compiles, without any poking. Kudos to them for writing good code. I was surprised and somewhat impressed that these 5 year old sources compile with modern GNU and system libraries. Mind you, I only built the parts of it I wanted:
I actually would like to change my vote now. I voted for KDEv4 for a couple of reasons but mostly because I had some difficulties with KTown. The most recent -Current and most recent (5.68.0) KTown seems to have solved all that. It's very nice, highly refined and smooth, and is low on resource usage, even with Baloo fully enabled. I'm getting idle usage of ~3-4% CPU and 8% RAM even after only a day old with Baloo fully active.

Wow, there aren't many 4-year-olds who can sing like that.
Will always vote for KDE/Plasma, it's what I'm used to. I have dabbled with other environments but, just like Slackware, I can't keep away. My all time favourite KDE was 3.5.x.

Have you played with Trinity? It's a modern fork of said KDE 3.5
