Oh thank you for the suggestion. In fact, I got minimal slackware with X up and running (in my VirtualBox), but I've switched to Debian since I have some problems having slackware works with the VGA of my old Thinkpad. I think I'll come back with slackware when I have more time.

I didnt have it installed

My install is at 1.2GB which translates to a 250mb livecd....
I wanna make it smaller as I have all the SlackBuilds for Gparted, etc
and stuff I might not need....

I did a hdd install of Fathom's SlaxRemix and it was 876MB installed with KDE and LXDE!

Uploading a rc1 livecd made from Slackware current (08/10)
that is about 155MB and when installed will be about a 700MB install!

I'll announce it later today at LQ as ClutchOS_Mini and will also be releasing
ClutchSCR rescue cd too at 269MB!

Can you release that as TAG files ??
Can you get it put onto the Slackware releases, so it is somewhere to be found next time it is needed ??

I am always finding this package OPTIONAL information 4-6 weeks after starting an install, when I really needed them the first or second day of the install.

It would be nice to have a set of TAG files (on the Slackware dist), each of which cover a certain requirement (And I do not currently know so I cannot currently make them).

The user that wants to make a custom install would be able to take the TAG files for the areas he wants to cover, and would OR them together and install that.
There should be no missing packages then.
Each of the TAG files would have the main package, the library packages needed, and any support tools.

If they had comments, then they could also be manually edited, and could include some commented out optional packages.

I am in the middle of (I started early July) of installing Slackware 13.1 and it goes slowly (trial and error). I have been running Slackware for 10+ years and have done many installs. I remember that one previous to this also felt like they were withholding information that they could of easily included with their package descriptions. I do not care for having to find this out by trial and error, and I do not care for the one-size-fits-all installation, or the copy-my-way installation.

I just released the Mini edition; which is a LiveCD
and not official Slackware as it has a few SlackBuilds in it.

or you could do it but I dont think Slackware will do it though...

Maybe you could use slackpkg template option
read man slackpkg and check out template options

Heres the Template for the Mini iso I put out today

right-click it and "save-as" Mini.template

put that in /etc/slackpkg/templates

and do
and it will install those pkgs

you have to edit the template as it has no desktop and too many xf86 drivers, etc
as its for livecd...

If you want, you can use this tutorial to get a very minimalist system. Of course, it is in French, but you can easily pick the package lists, and the last section contains an archive of tagfiles.

This is a good base I always use when I have to install a new Slackware.

Sorry to take so long to reply. I have to grab internet time on someone else's computer (mine is off net).

TAG files: I already have Slackware 13.1, so it is simply faster to download TAG files to select packages for install than a whole distribution, and there is the ability to add a few more packages, edit the TAG files, etc..

Maybe could be another Open source project, contribute a little at a time from many contributors.

I do not know what I could contribute to such project. I am fighting a bad Slackware install now and so I know my information is wrong somewhere. (Ran into OneBuck too, not helpful, insults, has the opinion that everyone else needs to be corrected, thinks that Open forum means he can take free shots at people; I solved my own problem (one of many))
Unfortunately, I am on the needs answers end of this one, rather than having the answers.

I also already have two Open Source projects going to release and am time crunched now.

Go through the distro and create your tag file. Then use it.

The documentation is clear with Slackware as it always has been. If you want too cook your own then by all means do it. Nothing hidden by PV & Team. Some intelligence is assumed for a user to investigate and understand the distribution in order to have the means to change things if and when necessary.

Bastardizing something and making it a fork or copy illegally parts of or the distribution itself does no one any good when distributed. Creates confusion and undermines the original distribution, especially when shared. Add in violation of the GPL/GNU and the stew is bitter.

Personal use is one thing but distributing from one to another improperly is definitely wrong. To have a common listing of things is a totally different situation as was discussed before. What's the status?
