Ok.I had to hookup a webcam.....(Family lives far away)
So, I got the correct drivers (spca5xx), checked with spcaveiw, and it works (Horribly, but it works. )
Now, what apps work with this silly thing? gaim obviously not, and the gayche thing is so forked, I can't make heads nor tails on what I need, so I'll ignore that.
Next kopete crashes like a brick if I even look at "devices" in configure. (Compiling/installing newest kopete as we speak)
No gnome. Don't even suggest it. Personal choice.
What else should work with this silly thing?

I don't know what stage they're at on gaim-vv regarding MSN webcams, but give 'er a look. http://gaim-vv.sourceforge.net/
Also, wouldn't it be viable to get your family to install Skype?

Thanks for all the suggestions. But they all have fallen far short in one way or another:
masonm- ayttm requires gnomemeeting for video. NFW. Read first post about Gnome.

Try an answer that goes with the post.
gbowden- amsn refuses to work on my 'current' install, with the ssl crud it requires, cannot get it to log on, no matter what I tried (ended up messing my install up so bad, wouldn't boot X, so had to wipe and reinstall 'current'. Not your fault at all. Thanks anyway)
willysr- I was looking for functionality before the next full moon, or whenever
Vista really ships. In other words: I don't want to wait until sometime 'soon' for gaim-vv
iwen- The JVM that Mercury requires messed up the java I currently have functioning on my system.
Thanks for all the suggestions. Anybody else?

You might want to check out some of the VOIP SIP clients like Twinkle or OpenWengo. These are still in development, but they may have the kinds of webcam support currently missing from a lot of Linux tools. Ekiga is another choice, but it is based on Gnome, so you're not going to want to go that way.
By the way, I would not suggest Skype. As far as anyone can tell, Skype has abandoned Linux development. The Windows client has webcam support, but the Linux client does not.

If you are having trouble with your JVM when trying to run Mercury, then I would suggest that you should get Java from Sun, which works perfectly with every Java app you throw at it.
As it happens, Mercury runs fine, as does aMsn with the openssl package that comes as standard with Slack, and with the most up to date "current" packages(as of 22/05/2006). It seems to me you must have some other fundamental problem which is being highlighted when you try to use these types of program

I've literally just been setting up a quickcam with a (new) friend from my local LUG . Anyway, this same issue came up ... here's what I did to get it working.
Code:
For those on list - I'm using the driver from http://qce-ga.sourceforge.net/
installed using their instructions (works as a kernel module).
To get aMSN working I had to roll my own copy of tls.sourceforge.net (which
required creating links from /usr/local/ssl/include to /usr/include/ so it
could find openssl) and adjst the aMSN preferences.
Not tested yet but appears to work from my end.
Simple really, practically plug'n'play :0)>
Only change is that, like I said, I've now tested and verified it works.
