Hello everyone. I've got a minor but annoying problem with my slack 11 install after compiling a new 2.6.20.6 kernel. In my lilo.conf I have the vga=773(1024x768x256) set. In the stock 2.4.33.3 kernel everything boots fine. When I boot into my newly compiled 2.6.20.6 kernel I get a black screen as soon as I leave the lilo prompt. The server still boots because I can ssh in just fine. If I set vga=normal the display works fine. Also, at the black screen if I wait for the boot to finish - I can login (blindly) and startx - which works fine.
I found info about using a framebuffer setting. I checked my kernel config under Device Drives -> Graphics Support and I do have support for framebuffer devices enabled as built-in. I also saw some options under the Console Display Driver Support. Under this area framebuffer support wasn't selected. I turned this on and recompiled the kernel - but no joy. Can someone point me to what I'm missing? Thanks for any help.
you're definitely on the right track; the framebuffer and related console settings are out of whack in your kernel configuration. Some aspects of this are specific to your video hardware, or lack thereof, and so the frame buffer configuration depends on what hardware there is, and its capabilities.
To save yourself some time and messing about, boot the old kernel which worked fine, and examine the settings. Then reboot the new kernel, and do the same, comparing the applicable settings for the console/framebuffer.
I agree. On one system here, i must boot with 1024x768 at 64 bit only to get display, on laptop must be 800x600 32bit, and main desktop runs with any setting. Just check and see what setting the original 2.4 used.
Thanks for the tips. I compared the config file for the old kernel to my config for the one I compiled. I was missing a chunk of the framebuffer stuff. I copied those sections to a test .config and ran make menuconfig and then recompiled.
Everything is working fine now. I got my penguin back on the console and smaller fonts .
