usb/cd automounting but access through command line

Hi all,

when I plug my usb drive in or put a cd in they pop up and ask what I want to do with them. If I say "open in new window" then they mount and show up in koquorer.

I can then type media:/sdb1 or media:/hdc at a later date to access them (or go to locations and choose media)

However I can't find where they are mounted when I am in the command line.

I have loads of directories under /mnt (which is where I have always mounted devices in the past manually) like cdrom/ cdrecorder/ hda/ hdb/ dvd/ etc.. but none of them contain my mounted media.

I also have /media but the folder names under there don't match up with what it shows in konqueror.

At the moment i am mounting them again using command line to a folder under /mnt, but this must be mounting them twice. where are they actually mounted when I plug them in so i can access them from the command line?

Stuart

Now they are not mounted twice, unless if your first do "open in new windows" in KDE i.e. and then go to the console and mount them again. But, you can always check where something is mountet with "mount".

They should be mounted somewhere in /media - as Tux-slack stated, see the output of "mount" or "cat /proc/mounts"

KDE mounts the drives as /media/DEVICE-LABEL, where DEVICE_LABEL is the label of the device, obviously. If you've got a CD labeled "MyCD" it'll be mounted at /media/MyCD. Likewise with USB drives (or partitions on a USB drive) and such. When you click "Open in new Window" or whatever it is, Konqueror uses the generic names (unfortunately), which I assume is because it attempts to mount it before it determines the device name. This inconsistency is really annoying, but you'll have to live with it for now.

I have my hard drive on a Serial ATA controller, and my CD-ROM on the primary IDE controller. So for my CD-ROM it is /dev/hda. For my USB drive, it is /dev/sdb1 or /dev/sdb2 (depending on the slot I put it in). Hope that helps.

Thanks all,

I didn't know about the mount command, so I'll give that a go tonight. I presumed it must be mounted under /media as when in konq the path was media:/sdb1

But I don't think I could see it under there when I looked for it, obviusly couldn't see the wood for the trees!
