Trying but getting turned off

Ok i installed slack. Now I don't have the manual for my monitor but looked on dell site for the specs.Showed a range of 30-70 khz on the horizontal side.50-160 for the vertical side.Well after the install I ran xorgconfig. When it came to monitor section I choose to enter my own and I input this figures. Now under fedora video comes up Intel 845 which is onboard. Now during xorgconfig the video card database doesn't list it but does list intel 810.Should I choose this or go with a standard.See once I have xorg configured and run startx I get to the gnome desktop. Now when I go to application and go to preferences I think it was and change resolution well it shows it as 800x600 at 85 hz.Believe it should be like 74 or 75.Also color doesn't seem right like its 256 under windows. Not sure if during config if I'm not making right choices for video modes or what the prob is.I want the clean clear video and color i get with fedora.I also tell it to log me in as my user to have it still come up text and have to do startx. Now I downloaded yahoo messenger for redhat then ran the command to change it over to install it and installed and well I do ymessenger and nothing ever comes up no error no nothing.I also did aol messenger and same prob get no where and again with amsn.I run the commands and says installing and I follow to the letter and do what they say to run it well it never comes up at all.My pc is a Dell Demension 2400 stock from dell with 512 memory and onboard sound and video. The monitor is Dell E773c.Also with sound where do I go to see if it can see my sound card or not.Sorry so long but getting tired of palying with things to get no where.

if you can boot fedora also, then get the values for your screen
section from the /etc/X11/xfree.conf file and fill them in in the xorg.conf of Slackware.

Please, a horrendously condensed paragraph may save space, but it's a nightmare to work out your specific issues from it.

1) Refresh Rate - You could try xorgsetup if you're not sure of the values. But as egag says, try lifting the values from your Fedora configuration.

2) Colour Depth - Check under 'Section "Screen"' in /etc/X11/xorg.conf and make sure that DefaultDepth is 24 - *not* 8 or 16.

4) Boot straight into X:
http://wiki.linuxquestions.org/wiki/...ight_into_X.3F
(Do this *after* you've finished getting X working properly)

5) Sound:

Either: Your sound card is loaded, so you need to run either 'alsamixer' in the terminal, or Kmix in KDE (KDE deals with its volume separately from the Alsa volume settings).

Or: Your card needs to be configured. Try running 'alsaconf' as root.

(To get more detail on your card and other PCI devices, run /sbin/lspci)

6) Y! Messeger:

Never used Yahoo's client - I'd recommend Gaim instead, which comes with Slackware.

lmanwarren
well meant advice:
put more white space in your posts.
use alineas of 4 - 5 lines.

that makes reading a lot easier.

btw. what's 3) ?
