Here's a project's homepage that I found on freshmeat, it's a script to build Gnome from CVS or other sources, I hope it helps you to fill the gap in Slack: http://www.akcaagac.com/index_cvsgnome.html
Remember that you've other choices specific to Slackware like Dropline or others (i don't remember their names but they're in Slackware-current Changelog).
I do believe it was not the building of GNOME that Patrick had issues with. It sounded more like the consistant bugs popping up and breaking things was the problem. (I could be wrong =/) I was sad to see GNOME leave slackware, but if it lets Patrick improve other aspects, I think the bonuses outweigh GNOME's being there. Besides, theres plenty of other GNOME releases that are superb.
Doesn't GSB already release scripts to build GNOME?
If you want a gnome get dropline. Its pretty sexy. I think im going to drop it for selfcompiled kde 3.4.1, but im not sure. Its even better if you have kernel 2.6.x becaue its hice with hal.
At least for me, I will not miss Gnome. I started out using Gnome during my very first explorations into Linux (with Redhat), but didn't find it much to my liking. Using Dropline added several useful package (namely Evolution) which temporarily caused me to view Gnome more favorably. Over time though, I found myself using KDE more and more, and at this stage, the absence of Gnome in future releases of Slack will not be mourned.
I'll tell you what though, I wish both Gnome and KDE would phase out the unnecessarily cutesy practice of having every app start with either a "G" or a "K". Honestly, why can't (for example) the calculator app just be called, oh, I don't know, maybe "Calculator" instead of 'KCalc"? Enough already -- J.W.
