switching users in gnome

I am trying to use the switch user capability of gnome. After creating another user session using "New Login" (Applications-->System Tools on my Ubuntu setup), I can toggle between the two sessions using ctrl-alt-f7 and f8

So far so good---but:

At least one document (and common sense) says you should need a password when switching users. My setup does not do this and I can't find any info on settings, etc. to fix it.

It depends on the distro. If your user has full sudo rights (like Ubuntu) you might have cached credentials via gsudo.
