OK Officer SCerovec,
I hold my hands up and plead Guilty as Charged.
These are not Slackware, but Debian 8.10 and Kubuntu 18.04. If the court deems these submissions appropriate, I shall take my punishment as a fair sentence imposed by a Slacker of good standing on this forum.
Nice. I have two nosy questions, and one practical. 1. What is the app shortcut next to Firefox, looks like a “v?” 2. The “slack” Tux in the top right, is this just eye candy chrome, or something else?
Lastly, tell me about pure ALSA in 2019. What benefits are you seeing that outweighs Pulse? What are the drawbacks?
[I]It can have all the memory it wants as long as it is snappy
And as long there is memory, of course
Haha, yes. The biggest offender is DavMail running as a JRE ‘daemon’ due to work using M$ Exchange. And Dropbox is surprisingly (slightly worryingly?) a very hungry resource. But you nailed it. It’s snappy, just works and gets the job done. I never in a million years thought I’d be talking about memory in the GIGABYTES and that I’d have EIGHT of them in a portable computer. I can distinctly remember saving up my money to double my RAM to 8 Megabytes and thinking I’d “arrived.”

The "V" is Vivaldi and the large number of browsers there are because I am considering abandoning ship with Firefox and mostly because of their decision to require pulseaudio, even though PA by extension requires ALSA.
The Tux pic is 95% eye candy but does serve a minor function. At any given time I have up to 6 operating systems installed and bootable just to witness progress across the board and be able to make informed if not intelligent comments on each. Each has some unique identifying visual so I always know "where" I am. I do this also within my WM/DE interface by setting up Root with a different appearance from User, usually immediately upon first boot, so when I need, say, a File Manager with Root permissions, I always know intuitively which is which.
I can't speak for anyone else but having been involved in the Music business in one form or another for almost 60 years and being still involved in semi-pro recording work I require extremely low latency. I always build a custom kernel to achieve as close to 1msec latency as I can get. This means that with multiple tracks and plugins I can realistically rely on 6msec-8msec system-wide. Using PulseAudio and being then forced to use the special JACK for Pulse (which lacks a few important features from the "normal" JACK) the very best I can hope for in a similar mix is around 18msec. This is an unacceptable figure even if it did something I needed and it does absolutely nothing I need since my soundcard has hardware mixing.
The drawbacks? From one point of view having to spend time manually setting up audio is a drawback but ultimately it is freedom, flexibility and power to me. It is a cost I am more than merely willing to invest, given the returns.
NOTE: The KGoldRunner icon is not for the game. I "borrowed' the icon to use with Krunner just because it requires one less click than rt clicking the Desktop and selecting "Run" and I use it a lot..
