FYI, I discovered an alternative to ripping with kaudiocreator that I wouldn't have suspected, dolphin
if you open with dolphin the location audiocd:/ while an audio cd is inside the reader, you will see the songs in cda format and also some folders, like "MP3", "FLAC", "OGG": you simply drag them in a local folder and the ripping starts
you can set encoding options in the tabs of System Settings -> Multimedia -> CD Audio

This has been available in Konqueror for at least 5 years, and thus in Dolphin since they share most of their kparts.
This is the kind of nice features you can find in many places in KDE, but which are not well advertised, and thus almost invisible. I never use kaudiocreator anymore.
THe KDE devs should try to find a way to allow people to find KIO more easily, I guess.
Apart from that, thanks for the tests, guys. I don't have time for this anymore and appreciate the feedback. :-)

Reason: Add thanks
Now upgraded to the latest alien's KDE that build without hal. Now the plugged USB key is only shown once. Thanks!
The least one that not working is audio. There is no sound even if hald _is_ running. After install the phonon-mplayer and prefer it as phonon backend, KDE could speak again. Is it a xine issue or phonon issue or udev issue?
A do-over with .kde didn't work either, so I replaced the original. The icons in the system tray next to the clock work. The icons next to the K-Kicker do not work, except for the Desktop switcher. I can rotate the cube through the desktops. I can use the kicker to start any program - just can't get the icons on the desktop to work. I'll figure it out eventually. The joys of testing!
Well, cat poo-poo. The darn thing is telling me I don't have sufficient access to change the file? Time to go Christmas shopping. I
I put a Thunderbird icon on the panel as a user, and its still owned by root. Got more to figure out.
Interesting... the icons in my user account work fine, but I'll create a fresh user with a fresh .kde directory a little alter on and see if I can duplicate. We may have to take this one to the KDE forums... sounds like maybe a bug.
Okay, that's interesting. I kept my .kde directory when I upgraded and my panel icons all work fine. A new user, however, can't use icons. I can add them to the panle, but clicking on them does nothing. Widgets, on the other hand, work as advertised. I don't think it's a permissions issue; in both my user account and the new one the icon is said to be owned by root... but my icons work in my account. I'm taking this one to the KDE forum.
