Check if your hostname is set. I remember having such issues when *something* cleared my hostname. I haven't up to now figured out what actually did unset my hostname and it went away after a while so it's kinda hard for me now to trace it again, but what you describe sounds pretty similar to what I experienced.
It seems that I got it fixed. It was a completely unrelately issue. I just erased all the contents of the /tmp directory. After /tmp was cleaned up, the issue appeared. Exiting and starting KDE again fixed the issues.

yes, alien's latest git versions were working fine here (no hal).
seems like they also fixed the solid backend in kdelibs, because other programs like k9copy and kaudiocreator started working again.
The version of K3b "f0687a7_20110105git" that I have in the 4.5.95 directory of my ktown repository has no issues at all with HAL. It works fine if you completely switch HAL off. It is essentialy equal to the 2.0.2 release, minus a few commits.

I just tried k9copy and its fine again. I've never used kaudiocreator but it fired up as well.
I use 6 virtual desktops. They used to be "stacked" 3 on 3. Now, they are in single-file on the taskbar. The cube no longer flips on certain desktops, and it just rotates through the virtual desktops. Also, that only works when clicking on the the little squares. The keyboard combo no longer works when cycling through the desktops.
