Switching from X to agetty and back leaves X desktop very dark

Occasionally I'll have some process going on in one of the agetty terminal that takes some time (like compiling) and I'll decide that I also want to start X up - or I might already be in X and I'll want to use one of the agetty terminals instead of the terminals in X (via Ctrl-Alt-Fkey). I think it's a really cool feature that I can do this n' all but I noticed that when come back to X from one of the agetty terminals that the screen is VERY dark. Everything else still works fine, but it's hard to see what I'm doing.

Anybody know why this happens? Anybody know how to restore or refresh the desktop without completely restarting X?

perhaps it's an issue only with IBM TP600E's....perhaps it's a power issue for some strange reason.
