Ok i been using slack for everything now not even wanting to log into my windows os only to play a game or two. So i rented a butt loada dvds from the store to only come home and find they will not run in xine. They are pc friendly dvd's and they just dont wanna run at all they give me errors and everything. So is there a plugin i can load on to xine so it will play these dvds?
For xine use the dvdnav plugin.
I use mplayer when I want to watch something on my monitor but it gives me green screen when I use the dxr3 driver with it, xine works perfectly with the H+ though...go figure...
It's got me stumped.....mplayer is working like a trooper except when I try to use dxr3 to output through my dvd card, then I get greenscreen on the tv. xine on the other hand dosn't have a problem with dxr3, perfect picture on the tv with full on screen menu navigation.

RTFM linux about the 'nice' command...

I don't know if I have a case or not, I need to do a bit more testing with module options for the em8300 first, thats what normally fixes greenscreen. If I can find a setting that works nice with mplayer I'll send the info to the mailing list though.
The Mplayer gui works ok for me in root mode, but in user mode, I can not get into Preference etc, and can not sekect a file to play. User mode allows me to go to DVD - Open Disk ok. Any other function does a fast shut down. I presume this is a permissions problem(?). What do I need to do to be able to select a file (such as an avi) as I can in root mode?
Thank you for replying. I feel there is a time and place for everything - the console may be faster, but the gui is more convenient for most people. The gui is definitely faster if you have to spend time researching the correct command line to enter!!! We are all learners even if we have been playing with computers in some form for a couple of decades (which preceeds the gui).
Reading the experiences others are having and the solutions to even simple problems adds to our knowledge. The linux learning curve is very steep.
Now to display my ignorance, the command you suggested needs a bit more explanation - I entered "chmod +s /usr/bin/gmplayer" and now the icon I had for gmplayer does not work! If I go to the console and enter "gmplayer" - gmplayer nolonger starts! So I've gone backwards. Can you help me out of my mess?
OK - I have restored the gmplayer by "chmod -s /usr/bin/gmplayer.
Now I can play a DVD on the gui (I select "DVD" "Open disk"), and I can play an avi file with the console - "mplayer -vo x11 /files/basket.avi".
Incidentally, when I do - "mplayer -vo help" I get a long list of options, whereas the gmplayer preferences only lists three options - x11, sdl and a Matrox, (which does not work). Only x11 and sdl work for me.
How do I play a dvd on the console? I tried: "mplayer -vo x11 -dvd /dev/dvd video_ts/video_ts" but get only a black screen for a short time. The gui won't play this file or any other either.
mplayer -vo x11 -dvd 1 <------track number, not a file.
yes 5 minutes reading the manual and you'll save so much confusion. i'd also recommend creating an /etc/mplayer.conf file and putting your favour -vo option in it, mine reads:
framedrop = yes
vo = x11
vfm = 5
osdlevel = 1
npp = de
x11 is a pretty poor output though, does xv not work for you? it'll use about 1/3 of the memory and cpu time...
