Slackware v. Gentoo
I have been using Slackware for a while now, and I love it. But Gentoo sounds really promising, especially portage. I kind of want to avoid trying it because Slack works so well. Are there any other Slackers out there who have used both? Or tried to convert?
I would appreciate any comments or advice. Why doesn't gentoo have a forum on LQ.org?

I tried once but I got sick of such amount of required steps in order to make it work
conclusion: Gentoo isn't for me

Do a search on this.
I've used both as well, but have used Slack for longer. Both are good though and I think it's worth trying Gentoo. Their documentation (I mean the handbook) is great IMO.

Started off with slack, then Debian, then gentoo. Gentoo has, by far, the best package management that I've ever used. I do love portage's ability to build packages in any number of combinations, and the fact that packages rarely depend on a PARTICULAR version of some other library.

I am one of them. Currently I am using Fedora core 4. It sucks.
Slackware has always been very stable. With Gentoo, you can be on the "Bleeding Edge". Gentoo requires more time for getting things done, as we have to compile the source code. There are Binary packages available though.
But if you still wanna stay with Slackware and wanna compile your own stuff etc. you can try LFS with Slackware.

This is something that has been a lot of times here. Just search the forums for that.
In case you have a problem with Gentoo, you can just post it in the Linux Distributions section. Sometimes, people overlook it, cuz we have to scroll through the page to see that.
Gentoo Forums are awesome. If you don't get the required help here, move to their wonderful and really helpful forums. But the thing is, they only help us with Gentoo, LQ helps all .
Nice, ain't it?

In my opinion, Distro versus Distro discussions are overrated.
Also, the Search option for the forums is not visible right away. It needs to be made available in a more accessible spot.

What??? Don't do this. Either contribute in a meaningful way or don't bother. This just shows you up.

As far as I can tell, for non-x86 architectures, Gentoo is tops. They have dedicated teams for each arch, most of which are completely unsupported by slack (the exception being x86-64, IIRC). I like my Ultra5

I downloaded slackware and gentoo. Currently running FC3, and it's pretty good. I'm a n00b so I probably haven't found the problems with it that ya'll have. Which would you guys reccommend, Gen or Slack, for a first encounter?

Portage is nice.
I dont like gentoo, becuase being "bleeding edge" isnt usually a good thing.
if you only update your system as needed, gentoo can be a great distro.
if you want to stay on the edge, then plan on fixing/repairing stuff alot.
Gentoo handbook/docs/forums rock
im getting ready to build a AMD64 system and have been debating between Gentoo and Slamd64, myself.
And I know these types of post turn into this(im going to do it anyway), but if you want to try a very stable distro with good package management try Archlinux
