slackware cuts filenames

I just put slackware on my test box again, and tired to slim down the installation. However, when I was using it, viewing my files from a CLI using ls, all my files were cut short to something akin to: filecu~1.txt. Which really doesn't help and I don't like it doing. Why does it do this and how to I stop it?

Nope. I've actually noticed this before, but it seemed to go away or something. Now it's just really annoying me. Esp. since it appears to actually have changed the filenames (not totally sure on that), rather than just amended the display.
