what you call "crap joke" is packet named fortunes.
just remove it if you do not like those messages, sometimes they are not so "bad"
another thing is, you should configure X server. xorgconfig is util giving you easyest start.when this is done, start X.

login as root then type xorgconfig, you will then have to put in some hardware info then when done, startx will start whichever window manager/desktop environment you picked. Btw its xwmconfig to change what environment you use.

you put it some wrong monitor info then, try and find out some specs if u can, they would be very helpful right now, because otherwise its just trial and error till you get it right.

1) Darkstar - You didn't name the machine, so it changes to the default name

2) Jokes - As mentioned, this is part of the bsd-games-2.13-i686-6 package

3) X server - This is not set up for you by default, nor does Slackware load X by default (hence you get left at a terminal instead. Therefore, you *are* in Linux). Instead of xorgconf (which is PITA if you're just starting out), run 'xorgsetup', which will automagically guess the necessary values for you and get you a working X server (you can then tweak the settings later if need be). Then run 'startx' to load it.

Also, based on what you've said:

4) User - have you actually created a user for yourself? It's a very bad idea, both in terms of security and accidental damage, to be logged in as root all the time. Use the command 'adduser' to add a user for yourself.

I'd also reccomend that you keep the revised Slackware book bookmarked somewhere.
