I really do enjoy the weather thread for taking a moment in getting to know the members of this community and where they dwell. I searched for similar threads in here for a general lounge, and couldn't find one for Slackware. I want to know: What does everyone think about a thread for general/random posts? Obviously there need to be some rules and regulations for making sure things don't get ridiculous. Sometimes these threads do become a problem, but I don't see that happening here (hopefully). Everyone in here is pretty laid back, plus it helps at times to keep other threads from getting off topic.

Ideas for this thread:

• Current events (not too political)
  
  
• New technology (building a new pc, etc)
  
  
• News (Slackware)
  
  
• Venting (keep it clean)
  
  
• Shout outs (dropping by to say hi!)
  
  
• Just other stuff that maybe doesn't need a thread. (like this? lol )

Just an idea. I'll try and put a poll on this if I can. For some reason, adding a poll before posting this is not possible. So if I can't add a poll, I will get someone to close this.

This sounds like IRC to me... I see you were in there recently

Weather thread belongs in General forum.
This thread is LQ feedback and not Slackware OS feedback, so it belongs to another forum dedicated to LQ suggestions and feedback.
Volunteering for writing docs is cool, but there is a sticky thread already dedicated to this purpose.
Also, there are rules about leaking general discussion to technical forums.

Great idea for a general purpose thread. I've been using Linux/BSD since 2002. My current operating systems: Slackware, Debian, OpenBSD, and Windows 10 Pro.
I love and enjoy all things FOSS. My primary desktop is Slackware; I started Slacking in 2004(version 10.0).

One of the characteristics that keeps me coming back to LQN, usually a few times each day actually, is that Jeremy and most Mods have very likely spent some time in IRC and old school Usenet where it was much more "Wild West" and actually adult. They are not afraid of hot topics like Politics and Religion and don't see the need to be Vocabulary Police, and really, don't need to be since most people know social boundaries and it's rare (thankfully) that Mods have to "step in". LQN is the best Message Board I have ever known, possessing the best balance, and I started with BBS. So Shout Out to Jeremy. Proper Job, mate.

It's work that doesn't pay while burnout is the same as burnout from work that actually does pay.
In other words, volunteered to moderate a few sites before, and it's constant pressure from above and below with basically no reward.

Yeah that's a good point. I've talk to a few of you already and it does seem that IRC is where this needs to be. I've already requested the thread to be moved to general. It's good to get a feel for what should be where and I really enjoy IRC. I think my main curiosity was maybe there are some Slackware users who don't use IRC that may want to drop in and say hi, or something random. ~shrugs~

I guess I'm an ingrate cause I don't see that as being true at all. The moderators seem all too ready to intervene or remove a post for something as innocent as using the word f**k as simple expletive emphasis. And regulars, rather than ignore trolls, will whine to moderators to deal with them. And neither is the moderation the useful kind that usenet moderated groups had, where a person involved in the particular subject of the group fully tends the group so that most of the posts are substantive and worth reading.

That web forums are the primary communications vehicle is one of the few turn offs for me about Slackware.

I guess I should just shutup and stick to reading the news group. It's low traffic, but is that a bad thing?

Don't be too hard on yourself. nobody (and that should include yourself) expects instant perfection. You love Slackware it is evident and I don't know if I can remember when a new user has latched onto it the way you have.

The "Change in the Weather" thread was purposely placed in the Slackware forum.
Someone asked the other day if was actually a weather thread or slackware development related.
After reading this board for years, there has, in the past, on occasion, been times when the development "weather" "feels" there is about to be a change. For example, right now neither kde5, multilib or Xfce-4.14 have been updated in the last six weeks and a new LTS kernel is just a few weeks away. That use to mean something, or at least I use to think that meant something was about to happen.
Not anymore.
I've given up waiting, hoping and/or predicting a new stable release and the weather thread has become pleasant conversation thread.
Let it remain as such and it should stay in the Slackware forum.
