skype seems to work fine for me but ring tones and dial tones refuse to work. i had the same problem already with earlier versions of slackware and skype. today i use slackware v11 and skype 1.3.0.53, while all my other sound and video programs work fine, except for skype.
To make the sounds work, you need to create a link /sound in the root directory to the sound/ subdirectory of Skype. The program searches the sounds in /sound rather than the sound subdirectory of its installation path. A simple bug, but hasn't been fixed for ages...
Does anyone have an answer for this? I'm facing the same thing. My audio works fine with my normal user, but Skype freezes on the "Connecting" screen.
In case anyone has this problem, I fixed it by going back to the 1.2.0.17 version and it's working great. You can download it from the skype development website or wiki or something, but you have to register and log in first.
