rage : enlightenment video player

Does anyone know what codec's I need for that off the top of their head, as I installed it, but it does not play videos. So I am thinking I am just missing some codec to get it to do that.

Well, playback all depends on the video format you are trying to play. According to the rage dependencies (and optionally vlc, libbxine for some use cases), the player uses gstreamer. Thus, you will need gstreamer support/plugins for whatever video codec.

twolame, and x264. etc, and maybe libdvdcss, if you are also tying to play DVDs.

thanks, I'll check to see what ones I do have installed then just keep installing the others and checking rage until it works.

Dropped in v. 7? (have to check the "deep archives") due to some lib issues or just a pain in the neck, like gnome, to support. Wasn't it just a WM for gnome back then and needed a DE for all the other toys?

I don't know about that far back, but I must have installed it, and I remember when I found out about rage, I installed that too, and it just worked. So I was just wondering. I do know E was always, one version worked, then an update, then it didn't work, then an update then it worked again, etc.. so I stopped using.

Ya, I have been looking at codecs here recently because with xplayer (from Linux Mint) has the same issues. But I get no video but has sound. Luckily xplayer throws up a dialog and says which one is needed. The next thing that I am going to test is the codecs Alien Bob uses in his VLC package and use those instead of anything that is in SBo. He does use some of the same, but he also uses some like a52dec (that I need) that are not in the SBo version, nor are some of then even on SBo. Maybe something for you to look at for your issues as well.

well I know i got His 3.0 VLC stuff installed to so not sure about vlc helping. I also have Manjaro installed running E .22 and everything is working, except connman which is normal for connman. using stalonetray and nm-applet for network. anyways in this one manjaro ( i'm in right now), I see elementary stuff in the setup that i think has connections to this rage thing too, So I need to reboot back into Slack as take a peek at that too. as well as icon images are working in Manjaro E file manger too, where it is not in Slack. I need to find out how to find out what codecs are on an Arch distor then compare.

Alien's VLC uses static libraries. It won't help anything else.

well I installed a52dec and faad2 finding BoB's slackbuilds for it I build them on my system, installed it didn't do anything with it. then I build rage from the tar ball it gave an instruction to add a version update statement in one of the files, the theme, some EDC file, I think it said, I just grep where it said to add it in the file so I could locate that file, because I had no idea what it was talking about, so after I fixed that, the change took, the warning went away after I built it that way. so I cleaned up the build re-tared it then used a slackbuild on it, and again nothing changed. it still does not work.

I am still not clear on your video source. DVD? Bluray? A rip from ffmpeg /mencoder or similar? AVI (wma, wmv from MS Windws?) and MKV are containers so its anybody's guess what's inside. the gst plugins do no include the actual codec - just a uniform interface - so you will need to add them.

libmp4v2 (mpeg4ip?) mpeg4 streams
libmp2 - for dvds
faac (the "other" aac codec)
lame/mpg123 - for mp3
xvidcore - for Divx/3vix
x265?

Does rage look for ffmpeg or vlc and use that? vlc is listed as a dep for "emotion_generic_players" so it my not be picking it up. Mplayer is included in Slackware: does it play the video/audio?

if you do a 'ldd usr/bin/rage' does it list any libs missing? also for gst-*?
