I didn't post this under "Bugs" as I'm not sure if it would qualify for that but I wonder if I'm seeing some kind of pattern here, concerning sound in 64 bit Slackware...
If someone who knows more sees merit in my "observation," perhaps they could convey this to someone who is a developer (or someone else on their team) with Slackware.
There is no pattern. The last one is completely different from the first two. The first two don't have enough information to determine the cause of the problem (yet), and the last one appears to be a PEBKAC issue of someone having drastically borked his installation by, among other things, running SUSE administration tools on Slackware.
In the first linked post, Alien Bob recently posted the correct explanation. I've run into this a few times since I use runlevel 4 so rarely. Result: user error
The second linked post is the same as the first. Result: user error
In the 3rd, PEBKAC indeed (no sound? recompile kernel FTW! woot!). I haven't felt the need to recompile the kernel for a hardware issue in years - for performance and size, yes. The issue was compounded with HDMI settings and being in the correct user groups. Result: user error.
Although, getting the correct HDMI channel set up can be tricky. I posted on LQ about this a time or two. I guess nobody uses the "search" feature.
