Performance problems with Slackware 12 on Thinkpad t43

Has anyone experienced problems upgrading their IBM/Lenovo Thinkpad T43 to Slackware 12?

I am a longtime slackware user. I have just upgraded from slackware 10.1 to 12.0. Everything "works", but the system is unbearably slow. I am in the process of recompiling the kernel, but at this rate, it will take over two hours to complete.

I have turned off every process/service that I can. I am now running the most bare bones system possible, but it still it too slow to use. Has anyone experienced this problem?

Maybe the disk DMA is not enabled, since T43 is using a Intel Pentium M 750 (1.86GHz) CPU. It shouldn't be that slow to build the kernel.

Thanks, but I don't think that's the problem. I have attached the output of hdparm -i /dev/sda.
