This is a standard 13.37 (i386) install with updates applied and Alien Bob's KDE 4.6.5.
The problem is that I have an old Audigy 2 in this old machine and despite all the appearances of working, there's not a sound out of it.
I've run alsaconf and issued alsactl init with no change. I've messed with the audio devices in KDE, though there is no sound from Xfce or the command line either.
It was working ok under Debian.
Searched the forums and web, found a lot of old threads but nothing relevant. Here is some info:
$ speaker-test

I also tried the onboard sound (Via82xx) with exactly the same problem. Any assistance much appreciated. I may have forgotten some info - I will provide it as required (audio is not my thing).
You'll need to download and copy the firmware, compile it and copy the firmware into the correct folder location for the kernel to load when your PC boots.
Acquire an alsa-firmware tarball (> 1.0.14) from the ALSA project's FTP server, for example:
This card doesn't need firmware. I have an Audigy 2 ZS and it works fine with the emu10k1 module. Have you tried to disable the integrated sound card in the bios? When you run alsamixer and hit F6, which cards are listed?
I've already disabled the integrated sound chip, I've unmuted everything in alsa mixer. I've also tried the integrated sound chip and can't get any sound from that either - though it's worth nothing that I could never get that working in Debian either, which is why I use the audigy.
Will try the firmware and get back to you.
Thanks again
//edit: Tried the firmware - no luck. I'm not entirely convinced that the driver is loading or even requires firmware.
I've tried 'MM; instead of '00' and toggling while sound is running - still nothing. I'm in Xfce at the moment have the mixer set up the same and volume turned up, still no sound.
I've noticed that oss compatibility is being loaded as well as ac97 modules, is this correct?
Lets back up a bit. Looks like you have the Sound Blaster Audigy2 ZS Value (the stripped down version of the Audigy2 ZS). Most on board sound chips use speaker jack hotplugging which I find highly annoying. None of the Creative Labs cards need extra firmware. The E-MU cards use the same module and those need firmware.
Did you check:
stray motherboard audio files - should disable in BIOS
stray ~/.asoundrc file, or old entries in /etc/modprobe.conf.d
correct entries in etc/modprobe.conf.d
speakers plugged in and turn on? (had to ask!)
in alsamixer, do you see "Audigy Analog/Digital Output Jack [Off]" under Playback
This last one is important: lots of Audigy threads on LQ where this was the fix.
I have an Audigy1 SB0090 and at a minimum you'll need:
Code:
cat /etc/modprobe.d/sound.conf
# --- BEGIN: Generated by ALSACONF, do not edit. ---
# --- ALSACONF version 1.0.24.2 ---
alias snd-card-0 snd-emu10k1
alias sound-slot-0 snd-emu10k1
# --- END: Generated by ALSACONF, do not edit. ---
Next, run
Code:
aplay -L
(note capital 'ell') to see all the audio channels.
then pick a channel, say surround40 so you use all the main speaker jacks:
Code:
speaker-test -Dplug:surround40 -c4 -twav
You should hear sound. Funny thing is, I've run SB for ages and never had any issues like this. I have heard that Alsa support for Audigy2 is a bit iffy; and that is why I stuck with the Audigy: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:C...igy_SB0090.jpg
BTW: usually a bad idea to cat random files to /dev/dsp....
