nitrogen restoring problem

Hi! I'm using fluxbox in Slackware and I have a problem to restore the previous background from nitrogen. Also feh does this same thing if I use feh --bg-scale line. I have "nitrogen --restore &" in ~/.fluxbox/autostart and I also tested it in ~/.xinitrc.

I have minimal setup, starting X with startx. When I launch X, the background image just flicks rapidly. If I do nitrogen --restore in terminal, it works like it should.

I have this same setup in debian but there is no problem with it. Could fluxbox overlaying or something be different in Slackware?

I don't use fluxbox so I'm generalizing here.

Since Fluxbox is a window mgr and Nitrogen is a background browser the the X window system it sounds like it's a compatibility issue.

If running startx gives you a flickering screen than your run level doesn't have a gui or might be misconfigured. (hard to tell)

What is your run level set to in your /etc/inittab file?

Did this start happening after you installed Nitrogen?

I have "nitrogen --restore &" in ./fluxbox/startup and it works fine. I don't have an autostart file so that file may not have anything to do with starting Fluxbox. Generally, everything you want to start should go in the startup file as .xinitrc is not reliable, as least with Fluxbox.

Is Nitrogen still giving you the same problem?

Just to elaborate on dwblas' answer:

If you run fluxbox, .xinitrc is just a copy of /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.fluxbox, that starts /usr/bin/startfluxbox.

But /usr/bin/startfluxbox just runs ~/.fluxbox/startup (or creates it the first time it runs for a given user).

Long story short, put what you want to run at startup in Fluxbox in ~/.fluxbox/startup and nowhere else.

PS. Fluxbox is the only WM shipped in Slackware that behaves like that.
