Multiple Video Problems?

Hello all,

I've posted a thread here and there with my problems since upgrading from 14 to 14.1 and still can't get things working.

I'm having these issues:

Certain fonts are broken, most noticeable in Firefox/Thunderbird but I see it in other programs now too.

After running a few days large .jpg's will display as blank boxes in Firefox and resizing a window like Dolphin/Konquorer will not redraw. Logging ouit and back in will usually fix it.

However after a while logging out and back in will not fix it and I have to reboot.
When this happens I notice I can't switch tasks either, alt tab or clicking on programs on the taskbar has no effect.

I have also bought a new to me laptop in the mean time and installed 14.1 clean and still see the same issues so thats rules out hardware.

One of the threads mentioned editing the xorg.conf file but the newer xorgs don't have a config file so there is nothing for me to edit. How can I get a baseline to create a config file to add a setting to?

one thread for example:

Forgot to add, Slackware 14.0 did not have the problems. But seems a bit has changed between 14 and 14.1, is it a kde issue, x issue?

Did you re-install your video drivers?

You should find "fallback" xorg scripts "/etc/X11/xorg.conf-vesa" and "/etc/X11/xorg.conf-fbdev" both excellent skeletons files for creating your own xorg.conf. Just change your graphics device and driver to match your own and you can check Patrick's notes for other options if you need.

OK, it took forever because the issue wouldn't show up until a week or so of use. So I had to make a config file and then wait a while until it did it again, change something then wait again.

It turns out the same fix listed here for a different issue on my old laptop is the same for this newer one.

It seems the x config structure has changed, rather than one config file in /etc/X11/ you put separate smaller config files in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/

Supposedly X will use a a config file in the old location so maybe I had something wrong with the syntax.

So the fix, rather than creating a complete conf in /etc/X11 is to create a file at /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ called
disable-composite.conf and put just these three lines in it:

Section "Extensions"
Option "Composite" "Disable"
EndSection
