kde much slower to start when logged in as alan than logged in as root

When I am logged in as my usual alan it takes kde much longer to start than if I am logged in as root.

The extra time seems to be when loadingperipherals and the globe icon is flashing.

Is there any way I can examine what is going on tto sort out what is causing the problem?
