KDE 3.5.1 kstartupconfig

Hi all, I just installed kde 3.5.1 from the .tgz files from kde.org, try to start kde but get a little white box saying "Could not start kstartupconfig. Check your installation.". Anyone know how to fix this?

Any help appreciated.

is that as root or a normal user?

by the way, slackware current has kde 3.5.1, upgrade from runlevel 3 and all should work fine.

Also, i tried compiling kde 3.5.1 from source but i got an error, something about it not being able to find an important program called kdeconfig.

Is there a certain order that the parts of kde 3.5.1 need to be compiled in? Help on either of my problems is greatly appreciated.

I read somewhere that in KDE 3.5 there is a bug in kstartupconfig, which prevents root to login. So try as a user.
When I said upgrade from runlevel 3, I meant from the console, not runlevel 4 which is the runlevel Slackware uses for gnome, kde and other window managers. This is so that the upgrade is not affected by any files that kde may have 'locked'. (I have done it this way for a long time and have not had any problems anyway).

"Ahhh you mean upgrading from kde 3.5 to 3.5.1? or from 3.4?"
I meant that you may be better off uninstalling your recent 3.5 install and using the Slack version. You can certainly use upgradepkg. I will list the packages if you wish.

ok
ftp.slackware.com/pub/slackware/slackware-current/
is the main site, or use a mirror depending where you are. I am in the UK and use
ftp.heanet.ie/mirrors/ftp.slackware.com/pub/slackware/slackware-current/
which is always really fast.

go to .../slackware/slackware-current/slackware/kde/ and you will find the packages

I have the following installed:
kde-i18n-en_GB-3.5.1-noarch-1 kdeedu-3.5.1-i486-1 kdepim-3.5.1-i486-1
kdeaccessibility-3.5.1-i486-1 kdegames-3.5.1-i486-1 kdesdk-3.5.1-i486-1
kdeaddons-3.5.1-i486-1 kdegraphics-3.5.1-i486-1 kdetoys-3.5.1-i486-1
kdeadmin-3.5.1-i486-1 kdelibs-3.5.1-i486-1 kdeutils-3.5.1-i486-1
kdeartwork-3.5.1-i486-1 kdelinks-1.3-noarch-1 kdevelop-3.3.1-i486-1
kdebase-3.5.1-i486-1 kdemultimedia-3.5.1-i486-1
kdebindings-3.5.1-i486-1 kdenetwork-3.5.1-i486-1

but I guess you can do without the games, toys and edu

the first one is the locale/language stuff, and if you use english, that is all you need, anyway, make your choice from slackware/slackware-current/slackware/kdei.

also make sure you have qt-3.3.5-i486-1.tgz (also in /kde)

go here to get package help/info:
http://www.slackware.com/config/packages.php

Konstruct probably took about 9 hrs, after it finished i added the dirs like the readme says but after all that kde wouldnt even start, lots of errors. Then i used the 3.5.1 tgz's (i saw the kstartupconfig was installed)then kde would start. When i logged out of kde i still get the same damn errors

I formatted and started again, just compiled a kernel, now i want to try to upgrade to kde 3.5.1 again, should i use the tgz's and upgradepkg or should i get the progs you listed?

OK the upgradepkg .tgz's worked, still getting the errors when logging out of kde though.
