Java Installer

I'm trying to install freenet on my computer, I downloaded it using slapt-get, but the command to install it wouldn't work
java -jar new_installer.jar

:~# java -jar new_installer.jar
-bash: java: command not found

am I missing some sort of java program?

by the way how is freenet? (if any of you happen to use it)
