Question How do you set DNS server adresses in Slackware

I am currently running Slackware 12.1 without a GUI and need to access the internet but in order to do so I need to set the DNS server addresses. I have been unable to find anything on how to do that.

Thanks in advance

Chris

Hi,

As stated use the 'netconfig' to configure your network. You can then edit '/etc/resolv.conf' if you need to add additional DNS or just to edit. You can use '/etc/rc.d/rc.inet1 restart' to restart the 'inet'.

Just DNS?
Then, as onebuck said, just edit /etc/resolv.conf, no need to restart inet.

Hi,

If you just edit the DNS then of course you don't restart the inet. I see now how that could be misinterpreted. If you do modify the '/etc/rc.d/rc.inet1.conf' other than the DNS then do a '/etc/rc.d/rc.inet1 restart'. The restart is not needed if you just modify your '/etc/resolv.conf' for the 'DNS'. Thanks for bringing the confusion to light. I should have been specific.

Even if you had done a restart for the inet, no harm.

Domain and error message

I tried using netconfig and one of the things that has to be set is the domain and I'm not sure how you determine the domain. Also when I try to run Lynx web browser it come up with the message "Alert!: Unable to connect to remote host." and then it says unable to locate remote host lynx.isc.org. I hope that this information can help narrow this down because I'm not sure what to do.

I always just use "localdomain" as my domain since I don't have anything complex set up.

Post the output of `lspci -vv`, `ifconfig -a`, `route -n` and `cat /etc/resolv.conf` as root.

Exclamation cat error

I piped the output of most of those commands into text files but when I tried to run 'cat /etc/rsolv.conf' it said 'no such file or directory'. Could that be the problem.

Thanks

Your `lspci -vv` output shows that you have an nVidia ethernet controller and that it is using the correct module (forcedeth). Your `ifconfig -a` output shows that you have an IP, and your `route -n` output shows that a gateway is setup. Your /etc/resolv.conf has a nameserver (the IP of your router), and if your router has DNS relay enabled, it should work. Can you ping your router? (`ping 192.168.10.1`) Can you ping google.com? Can you ping google's IP (64.233.187.99, but it changes...)? Are you using DHCP or static IPs? If it's DHCP, everything looks ready to go. If it's static IPs, you would just have to make sure that all of the IP addresses are correct.

We use DHCP, so could the problem be with Lynx should I try a different browser.

Thanks

Smile Solved

Thanks T3slider if you hadn't told me that everything looked okay I probably wouldn't have figured it out. It turns out the problem was that I didn't have a home directory. So once again thanks everybody for your help.
