gnome 2.6 doesn't start as root

gnome starts run when i run it with the normal user, it doesn't do anything when i try running with root.

X starts, i see the gnome splash screen, and it hangs there just before the icons start popping up in the splash screen....so no icons

any ideas?

i'm running slack-current if that helps.

This doesn´t help your problem, but why would you want to run gnome as root? That doesn´t make sense.

well it'd be nice to have a graphical interface the odd occasion when my normal user screws up or something. kde works as root, but this is a bit of scratching the itch i have.

If a normal user account gets deleted or something you can always make a new one and use kde/gnome with that. You should never use kde/gnome/etc as root no matter what.

Maybe try to delete the gnome root settings :
rm -rf /root/.gnome*

Have you tried the failsafe GNOME session as root (assuming you're using GDM as well)?
