Unhappy SUSE 9.1: KDE or GNOME start only as root

Hi,
This morning as I started my computer (SUSE 9.1) and tried to log in, I could not start both desktops: kde or gnome...
As I loggen in as root there was no problem.
Yesturday it was all still fine :-(
Now, I would have looked at the logs if I have known which ones and where to find them...
Cheers,
Ron
PS: found this on /var/log/messages:
Code:
kdm[3480]: X server for display :0 terminated unexpectedly

I have no clue to the fix. My suggestion is

Try running Sax2 just to reconfigure and save the settings. good luck

It sounds like a permissions problem somewhere. The log file for X is /var/log/XFree86.0.log

I once had a similar problem caused by wrong permissions on /tmp after a new installation. I think this is the normal thing:

% ls -ld /tmp/
drwxrwxrwt 10 root root 4096 Sep 17 19:48 /tmp/

To test what is wrong I did the following:
1. created a new user.
The new user can login without problem
2. copied /etc/skel to my home directory.
No change, I still can not login :-/

:-/

Besides the XFree86 log file I also have /var/log/kdm.log (for the KDE display manager). Anything of interest in there?

Have you tried starting KDE from the console? (I'm guessing this is what 'kdeinit' does). In this case you might see some error message directly on screen.
