FTP problems

Hello,

I am having problems enabling ftp on my machine. I have made necessary amendments to my inetd.conf and hosts.allow.

In my hosts.allow I only have one line

ALL : 192.168.0.1, 192.168.0.2 : ALLOW

In my inetd.conf I have uncommented the two lines

ftp stream tcp nowait root /usr/sbin/tcpd proftpd

and

telnet stream tcp nowait root /usr/sbin/tcpd in.telnetd

I can telnet to the machine without any problems but when I try to ftp to the machine then I get the error

"Connection Closed by remote host"

Has anybody got any idea why it might be happening

Thanks.

Did you restart the inetd after editing the conf files?

To restart the service
Code:
/etc/rc.d/rc.inetd restart

I have rebooted the machine quite a few times after that and also restarted the service but it hasn't worked.

I am assuming you are using proftpd. Check you /etc/proftpd.conf and make
sure that your "ServerType" is inetd, and not standalone.

Well how foolish of me. "proftpd" wasn't installed on my machine. I installed the package and now it is working fine.

sorry for the trouble.

Thanks.

vsftp is also an option, and a package included with slackware.
