drive detection

any way to skip certain detection of drives when the os loads? i don't have anything connected to /dev/hda and /dev/hdb and it seems to hang a bit while trying to detect something off of those devices. the reason i don't have anything is cause my mobo is an asys a7v with 2 ide ports as well as 2 ata100 ports (which is where my HDs are connected: /dev/hdg and /dev/hdh).

thanks,
drisay.

Do you mean while trying to install, or from an already installed system?

already installed... it's just a nit picky thing. it's more to learn where everything is in the os.

Probably no way around this, since the kernel will always scan the buses for everything it can find.
Your problem is similar to what happens when you use a PCI IDE controller, or a PCI SCSI card, which may or may not override IDE1 as the bootdrive, depending on the partitions and bootflags it finds.

I'm not sure if this will work, but try adding these kernel boot options to the 'append=' line:
ide0=0 ide1=0 ide2=0 ide3=0 ide4=0 ide5=0 ide6=0 ide7=0 ide8=0 ide9=0

If you know the details of the io space for the ide drivers you could use a reserve option so that space will not be probed.

example:
reserve=0x1f0,32
will keep device drivers from probing 0x1f0 to 0x20f.
