hard drive detection

i have an 80gb western digital harddrive.
windows xp calls it 'WDC WD800BB-00CAA1'

everything works fine with windows, an it says i only have 4kb of badsectors.
when trying to install linux (list of what i have tried)
slackware 8
slackware 9
suse 8.1
mandrake 9

when booting into the initial screen it gives out errors like
bad crc error on hda
and also
drive not ready for command

i get that a few times, other distribs spam the message more.

anyone got any ideas why it doesnt like my drive?
thanks for any help

do you have it formatted as ntfs? If so, mandrake 9.1 should help you resize your partition. This is just a guess. Resizing ntfs is pretty much a brand new thing for Linux, and it may be that those distros see it, and panic. Even if you don't want to run mandrake 9.1, you can still use the disk to resize. After that, install whatever distros you want.
