usb drive detection

I booted a system with knoppix 3.9 and connected an external usb 2 drive. Knoppix found the drive w/o a problem. I then connected an external usb 1 drive which knoppix did not detect. Windows did detect this drive. I then took the actual hard drive out of the usb 2 container and put it in the usb 1 container to make sure there was nothing going on with the actual hard drive. Knoppix still did not detect it. With usb being backward compatable, I am confused. Any ideas?

Run 'dmesg' in a terminal window after plugging in the drive and check the last dozen or so lines for messages about new hardware. At least you might find out if it is a driver problem or a knoppix problem.

I guess many manufacturers only bother to test/debug their products with Windows, so there are many USB devices that do not work with linux.
