Directory placement

I was wondering where I should put the files I download. For example I download the source for mplayer. I saved it in /home/username/downloads/mplayer
*username is the name of the user of course
should I install this in a different place like /tmp or is what I am doing ok?

That's what I do - just dump it in my home source subdirectory. It doesn't matter much.
