Dell 8400 with Intel 82801 FM/FBM Ultra ATA & 82801 FR SATA ACHI
I have a brand-new Dell 8400 that includes a 160 G SATA drive with (I think) Intel 82801 FB/FBM Ultra ATA and Intel 82801 FR SATA AHCI (aka Intel ICH5 and ICH5R, I think) controllers. Slackware 10.0 will not install as it does not recognize the drive (using the installation CD-ROM). I've tried getting sata.i (and bzImage, config, and System.map) from Slackware current and built a installation disk 1 that included the sata.i files -- the CD-ROM boots, but, again, no disk recognized. The Dell comes with XP, and I've used Partiion Magic to cut XP to 20 G and leave a big hole to put Slackware in (if that matters) -- I need to keep XP to do a couple of things that aren't available for Linux (like TurboTax and Family Tree Maker).
Looking through the logs at Kernel dot Org I'm not real sure what, if any, kernel contains support for the Intel chips and SATA drive -- if someone could point me in the right direction for that, I'd appreciate it (like: what kernel, what patch, what the heck).
So, does the 2.4.x kernel, with patch(es) support the Intel controller and SATA drive?
Do I have to get a 2.6.x kernel, and, maybe, patch it?
Is there hope?
