Intel 82801 Audio FC4

Slightly different problem with my audio contoller for Fedora Core 4:
The card works, but the volume controls are either on or off. The PCM volume slider is up at full volume from 1 to 100% and off at 0%. There's nowt half-way. So I can either have the sound on or off.
It was the same under Fedora Core 1 - I recently upgraded, and thought that might make the problem go away. I have used every mixer I can find, but they are all the same - all or nothing. Even the volume slider in xmms is the same.

Here's a quick snippet from lspci:

00:1f.5 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corporation 82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M) AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 02)

Anyone have any ideas?
