You should try compiling it with a slackbuild first, as that's more of a "supported" method. It's possible that the package wasn't built correctly or didn't create links to use the commands.
How can I find out what are the dependencies of an application and whether they are installed? Will the command 'ldd command-name | grep "not found"' be okay?
It seems you do not have to install anything additional. Please, read the description, especially:
