Well, i have a few older laptops with 5400 rpm HDD's, those boot considerably slower than anything with SSD

This question I have: Is it possible to get a Slackware boot splash with elilo (EFI) boot?

BIOS lilo, easy; syslinux a bit more convoluted but working via tftboot-PXE. The sparse docs I find hint that it is "just like syslinux but different". Maybe I'm misfiring a few neurons, or should I just switch to grub?

I think the only way you will find out if it's possible to get the boot splash with elilo EFI is place that image in the lilo.conf file and re-run lilo.

Have a read of the Rod Smith site - http://www.rodsbooks.com/efi-bootloaders/
From memory it will not tell you how to get elilo to load an image but it will give you a run down on th evarious boot loaders and what they can do.

Not sure. You can have a text menu, see pics in the right column on http://slint.fr/en/screenshots.html (I took inspiration from the examples in /usr/doc/elilo-3.16/examples/textmenu_chooser) but the documentation is mute about splash screen, so I was not able to get the same landscape displayed in elilo as in lilo and syslinux.

If you really want a bootsplash on UEFI and not use grub I would suggest trying syslinux-6.xx (syslinux 4.07 does not provide EFI booting). I don't use syslinux-6.xx in Slint because it is buggy and can't boot from an optical media in EFI mode, but booting from a hard disk works.
