another ati drivers prob - xserver loads to a white screen

hello,
i have been trying for a while to get the new ATi driver to work for my card a PCI-E X1900XTX (512MB). my mobo is an nForce 4 MSi K8 Diamond.

So ATi finally release an update for their ATI linux drivers to support X1x00 series and there was much rejoicing, yay! i dont need to use the VESA driver any more! etc..

So install the driver using that automatic installer, then follow the rest of the instructions, do --initial et all.
reboot and startx, and a white screen appears. i can hear the kde loading jingle and the HD loading KDE but still just a white screen . if i move the mouse around the screen an irregular clump of black coloured pixels can be seen to move around. so i try and go back to the terminal but when i flick to "F1" the framebuffer driver craps out and is just a black screen, flicking to any other termnal screen even back to the kde screen is all black and i have to do a restart.

the resoultion is fine, so is the horz and vert refresh. ive looked through some other ATI problems but nothing seem to work so far cwwilson721 thread while useful didnt help.

agpgart loads, i have /dev/shm, ive tried Option "UseInternalAGPGART" "no"

but still an F***ing white screen bah

ANY help, tips, links, acts of divine intervention or anything would be much appreciated!!

I might be totally wrong here, but maybe the ATI driver doesn't like running on top of the kernel framebuffer, and wants the "plain" console driver instead?

I made ATI drive almost work on archlinux -current in init 3 , but when I lockout of X I get white screen (screen of dead ;-)) hmm... but when I disable ACPI it works fine !? so problem must be ATI<>acpi.
